A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Poetry and the Creative Mind Day!  Creative minds have led the way throughout all of histories innovations and growth. Through poetry and art, they challenge the idea of what’s possible, and shine a spotlight on the society that birthed them. Poetry And The Creative Mind Day is set aside to honor the bright and glittering jewels that are the minds of these creative pioneers. Most of us are introduced to poetry and art at an early age, whether it’s the nursery rhymes sung by our parents, or the combination of poetry and art in books like Dr. Suess and Shel Silverstein, the artist of Where the sidewalk ends.  Poetry and Creative Mind Day is a great time to dig up some of your favorite old poems and read them, or sing a favorite old nursery rhyme. If your talents lean more towards the physical mediums, you can take out your paints or pencils, or any other form of art you enjoy. If you’ve never been the creative sort, Poetry and Creative Mind Day is a great day to pick up that opportunities.

Today's Bit of Inspiration:
  • The Voice No teacher, preacher, parent, friend Or wise man can decide What's right for you - just listen to The voice that speaks inside  - Falling Up, Shel Silverstein

Have a fantastic Friday!!!

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is High Five Day! The “High Five” is a sacred tradition that has been used to celebrate remarkable events in our day to day lives. Get the garbage into the can on the first throw? High Five! Just get a 4 on your math test? High Five! Did you get a date to prom? Did she say yes? HIGH FIVE! Did you just just finish a huge project for your Language Arts class? HIGH FIVE. Seriously, high fives can be used to celebrate anything! That’s why High Five Day exists, just one more reason to use that universal gesture of excellence, the high five!

Today's Bit of Inspiration:
  • “Give people high fives just for getting out of bed, being a person is hard sometimes."  - Kid President

Have a terrific Thursday!!!

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Haiku Day! If there’s one thing that we remember from High School, it’s the day that we were introduced to the great Japanese art-form that is Haiku. While it may have an ancient and noble history, it is likely at it’s most ignoble when a group of young kids try to cobble together Haiku in series of five-seven-five. Haiku Day reminds us that there is so much more to this style of poetry than a misspent week in our literature courses!

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Save the Elephant Day!  They might be wildlife icons, but, sadly, elephants are in crisis. Save The Elephant Day is a chance to show our love and support for these much-loved giants and raise awareness of the threats to their future in both Africa and Asia, ranging from ivory poachers and traffickers to loss of habitat.  Also known as World Elephant Day, the occasion was founded by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, based in Thailand, working together with Canadian film-maker Patricia Sims. The launch of this international initiative in 2012 saw the release of the documentary film ‘Return to the Forest’, narrated by Star Trek legend William Shatner.  The ideal way to mark the day is to donate to a charity helping elephants or organize an event in aid of these beautiful but threatened beasts. You could also watch a wildlife film about elephants or sign a petition to raise awareness.

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Sibling Day!   The bond between siblings is extra-special, even more so if one of them has a life-long illness or a disability. Sibling Day is a way of honoring that special bond. Siblings Day was created by Claudia Evart, a freelance paralegal from Manhattan, NY. Evart started the day after losing both her sister at an early age. It is a day of celebration and recognition for brothers and sisters around the world. Siblings Day can be celebrated by sending a card, gift, making a dinner invitation or simply going for a walk in the park. The date of Siblings Day is very important to its founder Claudia as it marks the birthday of her sister Lisette.  The siblings bonds are life-long relationships usually lasting from cradle to grave.  It is usually the longest relationship of a person’s life and typically much longer than a mother’s and father’s relationship.

Today's Bit of Inspiration:
  • Sisters and brothers are the truest, purest forms of love, family  and friendship, knowing when to hold you and when to challenge you, but  always being a part of you." — Carol Ann Albright-Eastman

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!!

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Unicorn Day!  What mythological creature has been more beloved over the centuries than the unicorn? Symbols of purity and enchantment, unicorns are loved by both children and adults alike and are integral parts of many fairy tales and legends. For all the roles they’ve played in literature, cinematography, and art as a whole, unicorns more than deserve their own day!

Today's Bit of Inspiration:
  • “Be a unicorn in a field of horses."

Have a terrific Tuesday!!!

A Little Randomness:
  • Today is Draw a Picture of a Bird Day!  Pencil, pen, felt tip or chalk, this day is great fun for everyone. It’s very straightforward: simply draw a picture of a bird in tribute to our feathered friends, but if you fancy some diversity there’s actually a wide range of options.  Will you draw a chicken or a chaffinch? Perhaps a peacock, penguin or puffin? If you’d prefer a goose, will it be of the Canadian, Red-breasted, Woods-walking or Spur-winged variety? And you’d be amazed by how many types of hawk there are prowling the skies!

Have a marvelous Monday!!!

New Social Studies Standards

NEW SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

What do you think our students should know about social studies?  The Nebraska Department of Education has released a draft of the Nebraska Social Studies Standards and would love to hear from you!  The standards provide the framework for what students are expected to know about social studies, and your feedback will help make improvements to the standards before they are adopted.  The survey should take less than ten minutes to complete for each grade level selected.    To complete the survey, use this link:  <a href="https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnde.qualtrics.com%2Fjfe%2Fform%2FSV_5nVd7KeiGybGmUZ&data=02%7C01%7CMichele.Mulder%40ops.org%7C7ba68d3d15fb40613b3e08d6b9dd3424%7C58e66db6211b4a37b7e80ef6967420c1%7C1%7C0%7C636900757046965928&sdata=np8sKC6k5wKOXtzFeBOsleUjWIfhuyG1ZDuVnOgf5SU%3D&reserved=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-auth="Verified" id="LPlnk643353" class="x_OWAAutoLink" title="Original URL: https://nde.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5nVd7KeiGybGmUZ Click or tap if you trust this link."> Social Studies Standards Survey.
