Meet Your English Learner Teachers

MRS. MOATS

Elizabeth Moats
Hello! ¡Hola! Jambo! Namaste! Ghaw luh a ghay! Welcome to Monroe! My name is Betsy Moats, and I am excited to work with EL’s again this year as they participate in rigorous lessons and strive to achieve high academic standards. The EL team is focused on culturally responsive teaching that creates an environment where students feel socially connected and intellectually safe.

I have an accounting degree from Texas Christian University and a secondary education degree from Peru State College. I started my teaching career with the YMCA International program in Arequipa, Peru. Since then, I’ve had the great privilege of traveling all over the world, learning about different cultures and bringing that information into the classroom. Listening to my students’ stories and learning about their cultures is one of my favorite parts of this career. This will be my 11th year at Monroe.

Outside of school, I love spending time outdoors with my husband and twin daughters.

Ms. Birkemeier

Hello! My name is Miss Birkemeier and I am one of the ESL teachers at Monroe. This is my 7th year teaching. I taught third grade for 5 years at Harrison Elementary, ESL at Nathan Hale last year, and now this year at Monroe!
I grew up in Omaha and went to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I have my B.S. in K-6 Elementary Education from UNO, a pre-k to 12th grade endorsement in ESL from Concordia University, a M.S. in Literacy from UNO, and an Early Childhood endorsement from Creighton University.
I am excited to be at Monroe and to meet all the students!
