Meet Your Team Teachers

MS. HARMS

Morgan Harms

WHO AM I?

Hello all! My name is Ms. Morgan Harms, and I am an 8th grade English language arts teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in secondary education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a minor in English. I have two dogs--Salinger (yes, he's named after the author) and Chelsea. In my free time, I love to run, hike, kayak, and read. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the relationships I build with my students and getting them excited about reading and writing. I believe learning begins when students feel that they are cared for and valued. I am excited about joining the Monroe team, and I'm looking forward to this school year!

MS. THELEN

Katie Thelen

WHO AM I?

Hello, my name is Ms. Thelen, I am the 8B Social Studies teacher. I am eager to start my 5th year at Monroe! I am an Omaha native and graduated from the University of Nebraska and I am currently working on my master's degree through Doane College. Aside from teaching, I love being with my family, reading, cooking, and baking!

My primary goal is to develop capable citizens who are empowered with knowledge, skills, and attitudes enabling them to make informed decisions in a diverse world. I believe each student is a unique individual and brings differing experiences and viewpoints that should be celebrated. I will meet all students where they are and help them reach their social, emotional, and academic goals.

MS. HAYNES

Laura Haynes

WHO AM I?

My name is Ms. Haynes and I am the 8th grade counselor.  I have been a mustang for six years. I love coming to work everyday and consider my students as my kids.  I have two children of my own, Lenox (12) and Zoe (8), and a dog named Murphy.  My favorite things are drinking coffee, taking care of plants, and watching my son play basketball.  I look forward to this year as I send my group of 8th graders off to high school after three amazing years together where we learned from each other, grew together, laughed, cried and went through ups and downs.  This year is going to give us new experiences but we will get through it together because we are a FAMILY!

I love everything about science and work really hard to get students excited about science as well.

MRS. D. THOMAS

Diana Thomas

WHO AM I?

My Name is Mrs. Diana Thomas.  I am the administrator for our 8B team.  I have worked in the North Omaha community for 26+ years and am a proud OPS alum.  I began my career in Special Education at Northwest and then moved to Benson where I was the MH-Mild teacher, Dean of Students and lastly their Asst. Principal/Activities Director.   I have been the Asst. Principal/Athletic Director at Monroe for the past 7 years.  I am truly excited about this opportunity to work with and help prepare our student(s) for success in middle school and life!

I am a rule follower, who values education; therefore, I strive to hold myself, our staff and students accountable for being our best selves.  My desire is for all students to experience academic, emotional, social and behavioral success.  With that being said, at Monroe we have four (4) key expectations, which are:  Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible & Be Your Best!  This year our amazing staff will work closely with your student on our 4 B’s.  It is my hope that we, (school staff) and you (parents/guardians) will collaborate in this endeavor to help our young people meet and/or exceed these expectations and have the best school year possible.

On a personal note, I have been married to my husband David for 27 years.  We have two daughters who attended Monroe and Benson.  We have a 12-yr old grandson who attends OPS and a 5-yr old granddaughter who will be starting Kindergarten this fall.  I mention this because I want you to know just how dedicated I am to Monroe, our district, you and your student.  I believe that Monroe is the best school in the city!  Therefore, our partnership will help our students demonstrate excellence on a daily basis and experience tremendous academic success!

I look forward to working with you!  If you have any questions/concerns please contact me at 531-299-8237 or by email at diana.thomas@ops.org.
