Meet Your Team Teachers WHO AM I?

Cara Gotschall

Hello!  My name is Mrs. Cara Gotschall. I am a co-teacher with the math and language arts educators, where I get the opportunity of working in a variety of learning environments. I am starting my 21st year of teaching in Omaha Public Schools. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and special education, as well as a master's degree in special education: behavioral disorders. I am married, and I have one son. I enjoy working as a team with colleagues, families, students, and service providers to offer a unique approach to learning (for students), through accommodations and adjustments to lessons, so that all students are successful in their learning. One of the moments I enjoy about teaching is seeing a student apply information they have previously been taught, to a skill being presented to them.

Gemma Nguyen

Hi there! My name is Gemma Nguyen and I am one of the 6B Math teachers. I was born and raised in Vietnam. My family came to the United States in the late 1991 and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana until now. I was sent to study aboard and graduated from a Catholic High School in Wisconsin in 1998 and went to Saint Thomas University in Houston, Texas for my undergraduate and graduate school. I obtained a Bachelor Degree in Theology with a minor in Mathematics and continued on to pursue my Master Degree in Education and currently working on my Master Degree in Mathematics at UNL. My philosophy in life is to never give up on anything or anybody. I have a great compassion for my students and want them to know that they are loved and valued just because who they are.
I have a beautiful family that I enjoy to be with every moment. I am married and have three precious daughters. They are at age 6, 4 and 1. I love to spend time to explore new things with them each day. Cooking is my favorite hobby. I am excited and looking forward to working with you all this year!

Brandi Uher

Hello, my name is Brandi Uher and I am a Dean of Students.  I am the 6th grade administrator this year.  This is my 17th year at Monroe so I may know some of your older siblings if they attended here!  I have a 1-year-old son and a brand-new little puppy at home.  I enjoy reading, playing volleyball, and going on walks.  Middle school is a difficult time in everyone's life.  I'm hoping I can help you become a positive, strong, independent learner.  I 100% believe in our mission statement to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Your Best!!

Cydney Griffin

University of Nebraska at Omaha. I have been teaching at Monroe Middle for three years now and love it. My teaching philosophy is to meet every student with an open heart, be ready to educate everyone whether we are together or learning from a distance. Through building strong relationships with my students, they will be reassured I have their best interest at heart.   Let's have a great year! :)

Sherri Strain

Hello All!  My name is Sherri Strain and I am the 6B science teacher. I have been teaching in Omaha for Omaha Public Schools for 10 years. Five years in the elementary setting and then this is my 5th year at Monroe. I have 2 adult step-sons and also 2 daughters of my own. I love to be outdoors and spend time fishing and going to baseball games. My teaching philosophy is that I believe a teacher is morally obligated to enter the classroom with the highest of expectations for each and every one of her students. With the correct guidance ALL students can and will achieve those expectations.

Rebecca Hartman

Hello! My name is Rebecca Hartman and I am the 6B Social Studies teacher. I was born and raised here in Omaha and attended OPS as a student myself. I received my Bachelor's degree from Univ. of Neb. at Kearney and my Master's degree from College of St. Mary. I am married and have three step-sons who are all in high school this year. In my free time, I spend lots of time with my cats, ferrets and chickens or kayaking and motorcycle riding with my husband. My teaching philosophy reflects my belief that all students have the right to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. My goal is to help students become knowledgeable global citizens. I look forward to learning and growing with all of you this year!

Caitlin Walthers

Hi there!  My name is Caitlin Walthers and I am the 6B English Language Arts teacher.  I was born and raised in Southern, California and moved to Phoenix, Arizona for college in 2015.  There I attended Grand Canyon University and received my Bachelor’s Degree in English for Secondary Education.  I taught 7th grade English Language Arts there for a year and half and just recently moved to Omaha this past summer.

My teaching philosophy aligns closely to Omaha Public Schools, based on the idea that all students deserve an equitable education that meets each individual students’ needs.  My goal is to help my students discover their academic strengths as well as important life skills, to better prepare them for their future.

Michael MacConnell

Hi! My name is Mike MacConnell, and I'm one of the English Language Arts teachers on 6B this year. I've lived in Omaha for the past five years. Prior to that, I taught elementary ESL in Lincoln. This is my second-year teaching 6th grade, and my fourth year at Monroe. Unlike many of the other staff bios you'll read, I have no children or pets, so my life outside of school is pretty quiet. I live in the Old Market, and I enjoy going to the restaurants and shops downtown (when they're open).
As we embark on this journey together, my goal is to empower each student to harness the potential that is already inside of them. I hope to challenge your child and help him or her grow in new and exciting ways. We will learn to read, write, spell, and comprehend. Just as importantly, however, we will learn what it means to be respectful, caring, and compassionate to each other.
While the weeks and months ahead are almost certain to present challenges, I believe those things provide us all with opportunities to learn, grow, and support each other. With that being said, I look forward to the opportunity to learn and grow together with your student this year, whatever that looks like.
